The numbers that decide how a game feels are ping, latency and jitter — and they barely relate to how many Mbps you pay for. Here's what each one means, what "good" looks like and how to dial in your connection for competitive gaming.
Ping is the round-trip time between your device and the game server, measured in milliseconds (ms). You press fire, the request goes to the server and back — that round trip is your ping. Lower is better.
Latency is the total delay between your action and the game's response, including your hardware and the game engine. Ping is the network slice of it, but your gear, the server and the game engine add a little too. Most gamers use the two words interchangeably, and day to day that's close enough.
Jitter is how much that latency varies moment to moment — and it's usually what causes rubber-banding and missed shots.

For gaming responsiveness, ping matters far more than raw download speed. Once your household has enough bandwidth—often much less than people expect—adding more Mbps won't lower your latency.

Most “lag” complaints are really about jitter, not average ping.
