Celebrating Hispanic-Owned Small Businesses During Hispanic Heritage Month

HHM

Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana!During this month communities gather to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation. This mid-month celebration marks the 1821 declaration of independence for five countries, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, and is closely followed by the independence of Mexico, Chile, and Belize.

This independent spirit may be a driving factor behind why 75% of small businesses in the US are created by Hispanics. These businesses that are estimated to employ 2.7 million Americans also contribute almost $500 billion to our economy.

Unfortunately, Latino-owned businesses were also among the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many faced difficult times and were among the 100,000 small businesses forced to close their physical locations.

Even through this unprecedented crisis, we have seen remarkable examples of resilience and reinvention. Restaurant owners, now armed with an app and website, survive on take-out and online orders. Gym owners are growing memberships by offering virtual training and leveraging digital media to reach even more customers.
