Train Your Way to Employee Success

Get Your Workforce Up to Speed — Faster

Today, there are more options than ever for training employees, ranging from in-person sessions to online video and micro-learning modules.

Be sure you have the right speed to use these rich media training options. Optimum Online has multiple speed optionsthat let you tailor your internet service to the speed and capacity you need.

Small to midsize businesses (SMBs) have embraced training. According to Babson College's The State of Small Business in America 2016 report, the majority of SMB respondents find it difficult to hire qualified employees. However, fully 88 percent train all or most of their employees through a variety of training options.1

That's not surprising, says Constance Dierickx, PhD, founder of training and consulting firm CD Consulting Group. Today, training comes in many forms, ranging from traditional in-person to rich online media options. Get your staff up to speed faster with these key steps:

  1.  Choose the right format.

While some training works best in a one-on-one or small group format, other training can be done via video or online training modules, Dierickx says. Companies like Grovo and BlueOceanBrain offer short, video- or text-based micro-learning modules on everything from sexual harassment policies to using popular email services.

  2.  Build the right infrastructure.

If video and other rich media training buffer and stall because of insufficient download speeds, employees will abandon them, making widespread adoption difficult. Make the online training experience seamless by having choosing the right speed for your company's needs.

  3.  Integrate hands-on experience.

Within or between training sessions, be sure to give employees assignments or experiential components that let employees try out what they've learned. Put that newly trained customer service agent to work on the phones to reinforce their new skill set, for example.

  4.  Follow up.

To be sure your training is effective, follow up with and measure performance of the trainees. Did the employee successfully adopt the behavior or skill? If so, your training is effective. If not, it's time to change your approach, Dierickx says. Online video training options can offer quick refreshers that are easily available.
