Investigating the various service provider options and deciding which one is right for you can be extremely time-consuming. Furthermore, figuring out which services you need and whether you should bundle them certainly adds some extra pressure! For that reason, we have decided to break down both the similarities and differences between Optimum and Xfinity to help you decide whether either of these choices might be best for you and your family.

What should I know?

Optimum and Xfinity both have great reputations when it comes to delivering high quality service at an affordable price. Through our research, we’ve found that Optimum and Xfinity both offer comparable Internet speeds, ranging from 100-2,000 Mbps. Both service providers also offer unlimited data plans but Optimum has no contracts which means that there is no risk of early termination fees. Optimum will even buy you out of your current contract for $500 whereas Xfinity has various plans that require either a one or two year commitment.

How is the set-up process?

Optimum offers free installation for several deals listed on the website. For others, they charge a one-time fee of $99 for a scheduled professional installation.. This includes Wi-Fi configuration for up to six devices, the hardwiring of one device, and assistance with setting up your Optimum account. If you are interested in setting up more devices with Optimum, you can opt for the premium installation which costs $129 or $59 through the website.

As for Xfinity, they charge $89.99 for the professional installation which requires the installation of a cable line in your house if you’ve never had Xfinity service there before. If you have had it before, but not within the last 12 months, the technician will check on the existing cable line to make sure it’s still delivering a signal. If you’re not interested in taking that route, you can pay $29.95 for the self-installation kit. The self-installation can be done online, in-person, or over the phone.

What are the Internet options?

Optimum offers both cable and fiber to an estimated 12.9 million people spanning four U.S. states. Xfinity services 112.4 million people in 40 states, but only offers cable. Fiber differs from cable because cable is sent through copper TV lines whereas fiber is made of plastic and mainly used for Internet services. Most people prefer fiber because it provides high-bandwidth connections, while also allowing for quick upload times. Fiber is also less likely to slow-down due to high traffic times. That being said, Fiber is only available in select locations dependent on costs.
